Dave and Christy share a vision in the life work they do by:

  • educating themselves and others on ways to improve the standards of accessibility for Deaf and Hard of Hearing communities
  • living as facilitators who bridge the gap of ignorance and common misconceptions between Deaf, Hard of Hearing and Hearing communities
  • building a stronger foundation of diverse skills and experiences by traveling  around the world
  • and encouraging others to step out of their comfort zones,  challenge themselves, and seek fulfillment through adventure

Currently driven to attain a better understanding of the world through international experiences, Dave and Christy will embark on an around-the-world journey, discovering deaf worlds along the way.

Christy Smith

Christy is a succulent, adventurous and determined 28-year-old womyn from Basalt, Colorado who consistently strives to challenge herself. A graduate from Gallaudet University with a B.A. in Criminology and Sociology, Christy has worked as a discovery coordinator and counselor with the Aspen Camp School for the Deaf, a substitute teacher for various elementary and high school Deaf Ed Programs, and as a motivational/public speaker across the country. She created a children's television show called Christy's Kids: Challenge Yourself after surviving 33 days as a contestant on CBS's Survivor: The Amazon (2003). She is passionate about making a difference, challenging others to believe in themselves, and seeing the world. After living in Costa Rica during the summer of 2000, Christy learned the value of having international experiences and developed an interest to connect with Deaf communities in other parts of the world.

After being led into the Deaf community through interpreter education, Dave discovered an engaging culture that sparked an innate passion to become involved.  Pro-active, energetic, and committed, he has worked to improve communication access and employment opportunities for Deaf communities in Washington and New York, as an assistant art coordinator and counselor for the Aspen Camp School for the Deaf, on language development research for early intervention programs, and as an ASL/English interpreter.  Dave earned a B.A. in Sociology from Ithaca College and an A.A.S. in Interpreter Preparation from Front Range Community College. He was born in Rochester, NY and has traveled extensively throughout the U.S, visiting 49 of 50 states. His affection for international travel stems from study abroad experiences in London, England (1998) and Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic (1999).  Dave believes the power of education is an essential tool to eliminating ignorance and strives to be an intermediary of cultural understanding between Deaf and Hearing worlds.
